Spring Roll
A spring roll is a popular Asian appetizer made by wrapping a filling, typically a combination of vegetables, meat, and sometimes noodles or seafood, in a thin pastry or rice paper. The roll is then usually deep-fried or served fresh and uncooked, accompanied by a dipping sauce.
Spring rolls are known for their crispy exterior and flavourful interior, making them a delicious and versatile dish enjoyed in various Asian cuisines worldwide. Whether you prefer them as a light and refreshing snack or a more substantial meal, spring rolls offer a delightful blend of textures and flavors in every bite.
Certainly! Here’s a basic recipe for traditional fried spring rolls. Feel free to adjust the filling ingredients according to your preferences.
Ingredients for Filling in Spring Roll:
- 1 cup shredded cabbage
- 1 cup julienned carrots
- 1 cup bean sprouts
- 1 cup finely sliced bell peppers
- 1 cup thinly sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon grated ginger
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup cooked and shredded chicken, shrimp, or tofu (optional)
- Spring roll wrappers (either wheat or rice-based)
Ingredients for Dipping Sauce in Spring Rolls:
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
- Red pepper flakes or sriracha for heat (optional)
- Chopped green onions or cilantro for garnish (optional)
Instructions for Spring Roll:
- Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add garlic and ginger and sauté for a minute until fragrant.
- Add shredded cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, bean sprouts, and mushrooms (if using). Cook for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables start to soften.
- Add soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. If using meat or tofu, add it to the vegetable mixture and cook until heated through.
- Remove the filling from the heat and allow it to cool completely.
- Take one spring roll wrapper at a time and place it on a clean surface. Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of the cooled filling onto the wrapper, positioning it in the center horizontally. Fold the sides of the wrapper over the filling and roll it up tightly, sealing the edges with a dab of water.
- Heat oil in a deep pan for frying. Once the oil is hot enough (around 350°F or 175°C), carefully add the rolls a few at a time and fry until they turn golden brown and crispy, typically about 3-4 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- For the dipping sauce, mix soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey or sugar, sesame oil, garlic (if using), and red pepper flakes or sriracha (if desired) in a bowl. Stir well until combined. Garnish with chopped green onions or cilantro if desired.
- Serve the crispy rolls hot with the prepared dipping sauce and enjoy!
Note: You can also bake spring rolls for a healthier option by brushing them with oil and baking in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) until crispy and golden brown, flipping halfway through.
